Netflix is removing the ability to cast from your phone
No more Netflix casting
It’s no longer possible to cast from your phone to the television unless you’re using an older casting device, like the original Chromecast. Netflix says: “We no longer support casting series from a mobile device to most televisions and streaming devices. It indicates that people can use the remote control that comes with their television or streaming device. Think of Google TV Streamer and newer Chromecasts, for example. The update has been rolled out over the last few weeks, which many people find strange. The fact that Netflix has given it no publicity at all is not well-received everywhere. Casting is widely used, especially with the remote control. If you no longer have the casting device for whatever reason, then this was a lifesaver. It is also not explained at all why the option is being removed, or why it is happening specifically now, so close to the holidays.
Even not on AirPlay
Previously, Netflix removed all support for AirPlay, citing a desire to maintain its viewing quality standards. It is not clear whether this is also the reason why it is now removing this feature. You can, of course, still use the Netflix app on your smart TV or Cast device. We especially hope that others do not follow suit: YouTube is undoubtedly an app well-suited for casting. For example, think of a party where someone wants to look up something on YouTube and show it: that is easier if you just cast it from your phone.
