The Ministry of Health is going to report a site that pretended to be the CoronaCheck app including a QR code. Users could use these to access places where a corona proof is required.

The site in question is now offline, but was still available on Wednesday, NOS reports. The ministry filed a report on Monday and had a research company collect evidence for a possible criminal case. The site was very similar to the display of the CoronaCheck app, with QR code and below illustrations of a cyclist and skater. Users could choose from several QR codes that were apparently shared.

It is unknown how many people used the site to gain unauthorized access with the fraudulent codes. The authentic CoronaCheck app can block QR codes in case of suspected abuse. This has happened thirteen times in the past week. Codes would be shared more often via messaging services. The QR code not only indicates whether a person has been vaccinated or tested negative, but also contains initials and dates of birth. In combination with the mandatory presentation of proof of identity, fraudulent QR codes could also come to light, but in many places proof of identity is not requested.
