Microsoft is discontinuing various applications that bear the MSN name. The applications will disappear from download stores for various platforms and will probably no longer be standard in Windows.

It concerns MSN Food & Drink, MSN Health & Fitness and MSN Travel, writes All About Windows Phone based on an email from Microsoft to users. The first two apps currently have between 100,000 and 500,000 installs in the Play Store, but Microsoft does not provide further indications of how many users there are. The company cites the limited use of the apps as a reason to discontinue the applications.

The services behind it continue to function. Users can continue to look up the information on the MSN website. Microsoft advises users to migrate data from the services, but the page that should explain how that happens is not yet online.

Microsoft also puts the MSN apps in Windows by default. The applications will disappear from download stores this fall. MSN News, MSN Weather, MSN Sports and MSN Money will continue to exist. It is unknown whether the discontinuation of the apps is related to the recently announced layoffs within Microsoft. Up to 7,800 employees will lose their jobs.
