Microsoft made more money on Surface products in the last quarter of last year. The turnover from the tablets and laptops that Microsoft makes rose by more than 30 percent to 1.9 billion dollars. It is still a small part of Microsoft.
Microsoft makes the most money in the More Personal Computing division, which includes Windows and Xbox in addition to Surface. Microsoft does not disclose exact numbers, but Windows turnover fell by 5 percent, partly due to disappointing chip deliveries. As a result, PC makers have been able to produce new models to a limited extent or have to postpone them. Xbox delivered 8 percent more revenue, with a 31 percent growth in Xbox service revenue. In addition, Microsoft notes that third-party games did less well than expected, except for one title, which was largely responsible for the growth.
The division, which includes Office, LinkedIn and Dynamics, grew by 13 percent. The smallest part of Microsoft is the Intelligent Cloud division, which includes the cloud service Azure, which grew by 76 percent, Microsoft reports in the quarterly figures. That growth is less than in the same period in 2017, when Azure grew by 98 percent.
Microsoft had total revenue of $32.5 billion last quarter, an increase of 12 percent from the same period a year earlier. Operating income was around $10 billion, an increase of 18 percent.
