Ghostery launches business version of privacy tool

Ghostery, a company developing a browser add-on that can block trackers, has created a version for businesses. With Ghostery Enterprise, companies can prevent other companies from collecting user data from their websites.

Some Internet companies may track users’ activities on other sites. Facebook does this, for example, by letting websites post snippets with Like buttons or by adding code to URLs, while a party such as Google can collect user data with advertisements.

With Ghostery Enterprise, companies can now indicate which parties are allowed to collect information about visitors, VentureBeat writes. A company can also identify which embedded objects may slow down a company site or even pose a security risk. It is still unclear how exactly the tool works.

The business version of Ghostery relies heavily on the database of trackers built using the consumer version. Internet users who have installed Ghostery on Chrome, Opera, Safari or Firefox can anonymously send statistics about blocked content to Ghostery’s so-called Ghostrank database, although this option can also be disabled. While the consumer version of Ghostery can be used for free, the business version has a starting price of USD 25,000 per year, or approximately EUR 20,000.
