Firmware Update: Sony Playstation 3 2.40 – Update

Sony has put new firmware for the Playstation 3 online. It concerns version 2.40, which can be downloaded by clicking on this link can be downloaded. Sony’s developers have made a number of changes in the new firmware. For example, it is possible to win trophies and new options have been added to the Xrossmediabar interface. Furthermore, improvements have been made to the photo, movie and music support and twice as many friends can be added to the friends list.

Update: Sony has withdrawn the 2.40 firmware. Gamers who have installed the new firmware on their consoles report that icons are missing, while others report that the console has become unusable. The full firmware version 2.40 changelog looked like this:

General

• The system clock can now be seen in the Home Menu of your PS3. |The date and time set under Settings > [Datum en tijd] are being displayed.
• If you’re using a keyboard, you can now clear the entire text field at once.
• If you press the PS button for an action that cannot be performed, an icon appears.

Users

• You can with the option [Schakel systeem uit] turn off the PS3 system from your PS3’s Home Menu.

Settings

• You can now set the PS3 system to automatically shut down after the system software has been updated.
• below [Randapparatuurinstellingen] are now options [Controller opnieuw toewijzen] and [Controller vibratie functie] available.

Photo

• You can now print images from a playlist.
• With the option [Filmdatum] you can now sort items in a folder by month or year.

Music

• You can use a mini control panel when playing music.
• You can now play music in MP3 Surround file format*. * MP3 Surround can only be output with Linear PCM.

Video

• You can change the settings [Frame Noise Reduction] and [Block Noise Reduction] now also apply to video content stored on the Hard Drive or other storage medium.
• You can now play upscaled video content stored on a Hard Drive or storage medium. When you play the video content, it automatically adjusts to the size of the screen.
• There is now support for upscaling Blu-ray Disc (BDAV) video content.
• Playback of DTS on DVD-Video and Blu-ray Disc, DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 on DVD-Video and DTS-ES Matrix on Blu-ray Discs is now supported*

Game

• The procedure for closing software in PLAYSTATION 3 format has changed.
• You can now collect trophies in games that support this feature.

Network

• The option [Zoeken] has been added in the menu of the internet browser.

Friends

• You can now add up to 100 friends to a friends list instead of 50.
• The screen [Informatie] has been renewed and is now called [Profiel].
