Epson has expanded its range of augmented reality glasses with the Moverio BT-30C smart glasses. The new glasses differ from previous models in that they can be connected directly to an Android smartphone or Windows PC.

Epson’s previous Moverio smart glasses had to be linked to a small Android-powered pocket computer. Not only did this increase the cost of the device, but it also left Epson with the task of keeping the mini PC up to date. The new Moverio BT-30C can be connected directly to an Android smartphone or a Windows PC via the USB-C connection. The connected device provides both the computing power and the required power.

The Moverio BT-30C offers the viewing experience of a large screen, according to Epson. The image is projected in front of the user’s eyes via OLED displays and a prism system, while the user also continues to see the entire environment. Epson does provide a Dark Lens Shade, a kind of cover to simulate the darkened environment of a cinema with films.

The manufacturer mentions other possible applications such as gaming, live subtitling or translation of content and the display of tourist information via augmented reality. According to Epson, the glasses are also useful for 5G smartphones, because the larger bandwidth could provide ‘premium quality multimedia’.

The Epson Moverio BT-30C has a suggested retail price of $500 and will be on the market in June. Interested parties can pre-order the glasses in advance.
