Disney plans to release US streaming service Hulu internationally

Disney plans to bring U.S. streaming service Hulu to more countries. The company can do that after its acquisition of 21st Century Fox, because it will then own 60 percent of Hulu’s shares.

In a conference call with investors, Disney CEO Bob Iger says he is working with Hulu to bring the service into “international markets.” Hulu has multiple shareholders, but once Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox is complete, Disney will own 60 percent of the service and be able to make such decisions.

Disney probably wants to release Hulu in Europe. Disney previously made an attempt to acquire the British television network Sky, but an offer was rejected. That’s why Disney needs to get a foothold in Europe in other ways. The company will do that with its Disney+ service, but possibly also with Hulu.

Earlier this year, Iger said he was considering offering a discount to customers in America who want access to Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+. The company could offer some sort of combination subscription. This may also help persuade customers to say goodbye to competitor Netflix, for example.

According to Iger, entering some European markets can be a challenge. He says Disney will tailor its services to the different countries and will initially be selective in the countries it chooses to release services.

Hulu is a streaming service that shows live television in addition to series and movies. In the US, a subscription costs 8 dollars per month, but it also shows advertisements. A subscription without commercials costs 12 dollars per month.
