Discord is going to sell games

The chat application Discord, which is popular with gamers in particular, is getting a game store with a limited collection. Premium subscription users also get unlimited access to a selection of games.

Discord makes unlimited downloads of the games part of its premium service Nitro, a subscription service that requires users to pay $5 a month. Discord will also start a game store for single sales and will withhold part of the turnover to earn money.

A test version of the store will be available to 50,000 Canadian Nitro users. The collection includes Saints Row: The Third, Metro: Last Light Redux, Super Meat Boy, Hollow Knight, Starbound, System Shock and Kingdom: New Lands. The company is going to recommend games to its users based on their friends’ tastes.

Part of the store will be ‘First on Discord’ at a later stage. This is where indie games make their retail debut exclusively. After 90 days, developers can also sell their games through other stores.
