Dell will launch its first smartphone in China before the end of the year. This is reported by Reuters news agency based on statements by anonymous analysts. Dell reportedly wants to equip the phone with Google’s Android OS.

Reuters sources provide strikingly specific details: the hardware would be made in collaboration with Chi Mei Communications, while the Chinese company Red Office makes the software, reports Reuters. Red Office has now confirmed that it is developing software for a smartphone together with Dell. The Dell phone probably runs on Google’s Android mobile operating system, but nothing else is known about that yet. The device would be on the market in China before the end of the year.

Since 2004 there has been speculation about a smartphone from Dell, which sold PDAs before. It has been suggested for just as long that a device would come on the market ‘soon’. However, an earlier design would have been relegated to the trash, because providers at the time would not be interested in the Dell concept. Dell CEO Michael Dell was supposed to more or less last month confirmed that his company is working on a smartphone.
