The data breach search engine Have I Been Pwned is up for sale. The founder of the popular website says that keeping up with the project takes too much time, and wants to turn the site over to a company.

So says founder Troy Hunt in a blog post. He says he spends too much time adding new data breaches and building new features, especially since he still manages everything on his own.

Hunt is therefore in talks with several potential buyers of the website. He does want to remain involved in its development. “There are still so many things I want to make for the site that I can’t do on my own,” he writes. “I want to be the person who does that.” Hunt also says that it is a requirement that Have I Been Pwned should always be freely accessible, at least to consumers.

Have I Been Pwned was founded in 2013. The data of major leaks is collected and offered on the website. Well-known such leaks are those on LinkedIn and Adobe, in which millions of data were released. Via the website, users can check whether their e-mail address or password has come out in such a data breach. According to Hunt, there are now almost 8 billion records on the website, and three million users are automatically notified if their data is stolen.
