Chat app Slack suffers hours of outage

Chat app Slack has been struggling for hours with a malfunction. Since Friday afternoon, many users have been unable to log in, and messages are not delivered or are delayed. The makers say they do not yet know when the malfunction will be solved.

The outage started around 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. Slack’s status page shows issues with virtually every aspect of the service. For example, it is not possible to send messages, log in, call or receive notifications. Also, the search function doesn’t work well, and external apps have trouble reaching the api.

It is not known exactly how many users will be affected by the outage, but complaints on social media appear to be coming from all over the world. Slack says in a blog post that it is looking hard for a solution, but that it does not yet know exactly what is going on or when the malfunction will be solved. “We thought we saw signs of improvement earlier, but the fix we came up with didn’t work,” the company wrote around 6:30 PM.

Slack went public earlier this month. The first trading day was a good one; the price immediately rose by fifty percent on the first day. The application is mainly used within companies as a replacement for e-mail.
