Canon EOS 5D Mark IV will probably get a 30-megapixel sensor and 4k movie function
Photos and specifications of the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV DSLR have surfaced online. The photos show a camera that does not differ much from the current model, but according to the rumors, the device will get a new 30.4-megapixel sensor and a 4k movie function.
Like the current 5D Mark III, the successor will get a full-frame sensor. The 22-megapixel sensor is replaced by one with 30.4 million pixels and the chip would also get Dual Pixel CMOS AF; the autofocus technique that Canon has been using in aps-c cameras for some time, in which every pixel can be used for autofocus during live view. The specifications also mention ‘dual pixel raw’, which may mean that the raw files are made up of more pixels, which could result in a higher dynamic range. The exact operation and implementation of this is not yet clear.
For phase detection focus, the Canon 5D Mark IV gets a system with 61 focus points. The maximum shooting speed of the camera would be 7fps. The screen on the back of the camera is presumably touch-sensitive, but it is not a tilting screen. The sensor’s light sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 102,400.
According to the published specifications, the 5D Mark IV will have a 4k movie function and it will be possible to film in 30fps in UHD resolution. Presumably that is the maximum frame rate and speeds of 24 and 25 fps are also possible. Filming up to 120fps is possible in HD resolution; It is not clear whether this is 720p or 1080p.
Presumably, the camera does not use the full width of the sensor when filming in 4k resolution, but a crop is made from the center of the image. This is necessary because it takes a lot of computing power to read the full resolution of the sensor and calculate it back to a UHD resolution.
The photos and specifications have been published by Japan’s digicame info, which is known for publishing information about unannounced cameras early. According to the site, the official announcement will follow on August 25. In addition to the camera, digicam info also expects the announcement of two lenses: the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II and the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L III.
