New customers will no longer be able to purchase perpetual licenses for VMware products starting this week. Broadcom, which recently acquired the cloud computing company, previously said it wanted to focus on temporary subscriptions.

In a blog post explain VMware and Broadcom that existing customers with a perpetual license will continue to have access to the relevant VMware products, but that this option will disappear for new customers. Renewing a continuous Support and Subscription subscription and hybrid purchases in combination with a continuous license are also no longer possible. According to the parent company, the prices of existing subscriptions have been halved, but no new prices are mentioned.

Ending the sale of perpetual licenses is part of an overarching simplification of the VMware product portfolio, Broadcom said. The changes to the subscription model affect the following VMware services:

  • Aria Automation
  • Aria Suite
  • Aria Operations
  • Aria Operations for Logs
  • Aria Operations for Networks
  • Aria Universal
  • Cloud Foundation
  • HCX
  • NSX
  • Site Recovery Manager
  • vCloud Suite
  • vSAN
  • vSphere

Broadcom acquired the American cloud computing company VMware at the end of November for more than 60 billion dollars. With the subsequent restructuring, more than three percent of VMware’s workforce was laid off. Due to the restructuring, Broadcom’s Software Group branch will adopt the VMware name and existing products and services will be redesigned. Before the takeover, VMware was also transitioning to a subscription structure.
