Streaming service Apple TV+ has won the Academy Award for Best Picture with its family drama CODA. It is the first film from a streaming service to win the coveted Best Picture award. Nominees included Dune and Don’t Look Up.
Apple TV+ made history with the movie CODA as the first streaming service to wins the Best Picture award with a movie made especially for streaming. It thus won against Netflix, which was nominated for the same award with The Power of the Dog and Don’t Look Up. CODA also won the Best Adapted Screenplay award and Troy Kotsur won the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in the film.
The film CODA is an English-language remake of the French film La Famille Bélier from 2014 and is about 17-year-old Ruby Rossi who is the only one in her deaf family to hear. CODA was barely picked up when the film was briefly shown in theaters. When CODA came to Apple TV+, that changed. The film has also won several awards at the Sundance Film Festival and won the British BAFTA Film Awards, the SAG Awards and the PGA Awards.
Apple TV+ competed against Netflix, which received multiple nominations for The Power of the Dog, including Best Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Music, Best production design, best sound and best edited script. Director Jane Campion won the Academy Award for Best Director. Apple thus trumped Netflix on three prices. In other categories, Netflix mainly lost out to the cinema film Dune.
