Apple is opposing the Indian version of the European law that enforces USB-C as a universal charging port. That Indian version of the law also requires older phones to have a USB-C port.

If Apple has to comply with the law, it will not be able to make as many iPhones in India as promised, Apple reportedly told the Indian government, reports Reuters. This also affects the Indian government, which wants as much hardware as possible to be made in the country. Many iPhones produced in India are older models, because they sell well in the country due to lower prices. The older iPhones would probably have to be discontinued when the law comes into effect.

Apple has resisted being required to modify older phones. According to the company, it will take longer to comply with the law with this text. If the manufacturer does not have to adapt older telephones, it is possible to comply when the law comes into force in July 2025. The Indian government will decide later on the precise implementation of the law. Currently, only iPhone 15 models have a USB-C port. All other models have Lightning ports.
