The purchase price of the average smartphone has risen by more than 11 percent last year, Strategy Analytics has calculated. The analyst firm claims that the price of a smartphone has not been that high in eight years.

Where the average smartphone had a purchase price of 279 dollars in 2020, this year it is around 311 dollars, Strategy Analytics claims. It is of course still an estimate, because the year is not yet over. The price was last this high in 2013. That was the year many manufacturers first put 4G on their more expensive phones.

The increase is due to the higher price for 5G components and the global chip shortage, the analyst firm reports. The average purchase price was also at this level at the end of 2017, but that was temporarily due to the release of the then more expensive iPhone X. Now it is the average price for the entire year.

The company arrives at the figure by dividing the market-wide turnover from deliveries of smartphones by the number of units delivered. An increase in the average can, in addition to increased prices of comparable models, also be due to the higher popularity of more expensive models compared to cheaper phones.
