AMS-IX exceeds 8Tbit/s internet traffic limit

Internet node AMS-IX processed more than 8Tbit/s of data traffic for the first time on Monday evening between 20.00 and 21.00. The milestone follows relatively quickly the previous one of 7Tbit/s, which was achieved in December last year.

A week and a half ago, the AMS-IX considered the chance that the 8Tbit/s limit was still small, but that peak was reached on Monday evening. The peak at 8,148Tbit/s occurred just before 9pm.

AMS-IX has been processing much more data since the government’s call to work from home on March 12. The higher volume is mainly handled during the day, but the peaks are also higher in the evenings, as more people stay indoors and use video streaming services and play online.

For example, there was a peak of 7.85Tbit/s during the release of Call of Duty: Warzone for a week and a half, but in the evenings after the peak at AMS-IX regularly rose to more than 7.9Tbit/s. The previous record with a nice round number dates from December 19, 2019, when 7Tbit/s was exceeded.
