Acer plans to introduce smartphones running on Windows Phone 7 for the first time this year. The company has only been in the smartphone market for a few years and previously released Windows Mobile and Android devices.

This was announced by Aymar de Lencquesaing, president of Acer’s Smart Handheld Business Group, writes Digitimes. How many Windows Phone 7 devices the company will launch and what they will look like is not yet known. The Taiwanese manufacturer does say that it aims for 7 to 10 new smartphones per year, including the Android models.

Acer has been in the smartphone market since 2009 and the first devices it released were equipped with Windows Mobile. The company soon shifted its focus to the Android operating system and this week introduced another model with a 21:9 screen at MWC. With the statements of the Lencquesaing, the manufacturer now joins companies such as Dell, HTC, Samsung and LG, all of which also manufacture Windows Phone 7 devices. Nokia also recently announced that it would be making Windows Phone 7 devices.
