4GB video recording limit has been lifted as of Android 11 beta 1

Google has removed the 4GB ceiling for camera video recordings in Android in Android 11 beta 1. Certainly since 2015, this has been requested. With each increase in resolution, framerate and bitrate, that maximum became more problematic.

Google appears to have modified the mpeg4writer API, but applications must consciously use that API to create their videos. As a result, for example, at the moment, Open Camera in Android 11 beta 1 can produce video files over 4GB, but Google’s own Google Camera app, surprisingly enough, cannot. That writes Android Police.

Under the existing conditions, users cannot shoot 15 minutes of 4k30 video before reaching that maximum. This while today’s file systems can easily hold files of several terabytes, which is more than the largest internal storage media of smartphones.

Android 11 beta 1 is available for the Pixel 2, 2 XL, 3, 3 XL, 3a, 3a XL, 4 and 4 XL at the time of writing. Outside of Google, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro are also provided with the beta, since Thursday. Xiaomi will release the beta for the Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro and also the Poco F2 Pro will get the beta. Oppo had already announced that the Find X2 and X2 Pro will receive the beta version.
