Facebook has released Mark Zuckerberg’s statement that he will present during a session in the US House of Representatives on Wednesday. Facebook CEO says Facebook has done too little to prevent abuse.

Zuckerberg apologized in the statement. He acknowledges that Facebook has done too little to prevent the tools available on the platform from being abused. He means, among other things, fake news, foreign interference in and influencing elections, hate speech and the protection of user data. According to Zuckerberg, Facebook has not taken its responsibility sufficiently.

The Facebook boss also addresses the Cambridge Analytica scandal in the statement. Zuckerberg describes that his company learned through the Guardian newspaper that developer Aleksandr Kogan had shared Facebook users’ personal data with Cambridge Analytica. Last month it was again publications from The Guardian that Facebook found out that Cambridge Analytica had not removed the data.

Zuckerberg says Facebook has a responsibility to prevent a developer like Kogan from getting so much data in the future. According to him, Facebook has already ensured in 2014 that developers can no longer just access large amounts of data.

The Facebook director wants to put in more protections to prevent this, such as limiting the data users can give to an app when they use it. Developers will also be blocked from accessing personal data if the user does not use the app for three months and developers will have to deal with stricter regulations.

Zuckerberg will appear before a US House of Representatives committee on Wednesday, where he will read the statement and then answer questions from Congressmen. A day earlier, on Tuesday, Zuckerberg will also appear before a US Senate committee.
