YouTube tests download function for Premium users in web version

YouTube is experimenting with an in-browser download feature for Premium users. Downloading videos is currently only possible via the official route in the YouTube app. With the new function, this can be done via the web version and therefore also on PCs.

For YouTube Premium users who have access to the test, a download button has appeared under videos viewed in the browser. Subscribers must have indicated that they want to use experimental features, via the page youtube.com/new.

The feature was spotted by Android Police and the site notes that it works with Chrome, Edge and Opera. YouTube itself writes that the function is available until October 19. It is unknown whether the feature will officially return at a later date.

Downloading YouTube videos has been possible for some time with numerous unofficial plug-ins. Since the introduction of paid YouTube subscriptions, there is also official support for offline viewing, but that only works from within the apps.
