You miss this on the Apple Watch SE (and it’s a great deal after all)

Apple presented two new Apple Watch models yesterday. The Apple Watch Series 6 is the flagship, with a starting price of € 429. And then there is the Apple Watch SE, which sells for less than € 300. At first glance, the watches look identical, but of course Apple had to make some concessions to keep the SE affordable. Which things do you miss exactly on the SE? Apple Watch SE vs Apple Watch Series 6: Here’s What You Need to Know!

1. Always-on display

The displays of the Apple Watch Series 6 and the Apple Watch SE are very similar: in both cases it is a jet black OLED display with rounded corners. But the Series 6 has an Always-on display that is always on, so that the time and your activities can always be read. The SE goes black. You need to activate it to see the watch face: move your wrist, tap the screen, or swing the digital crown.

2. Colors and materials

For the Apple Watch Series 6, Apple yesterday announced two new colors: blue and red. With the SE, the color palette is limited to silver, space gray and gold.

Series 6 is available in aluminum, stainless steel and titanium, the SE only in aluminum. But… the stainless steel and titanium version of the Series 6 are unfortunately not available here. In short: there is still nothing to choose from.

3. Health functions

The Apple Watch is getting more and more health functions, but with the SE, Apple has clearly skimped on this. For example, this watch does not have an ECG app for making heart videos. You will also have to miss the biggest new feature of the Apple Watch Series 6, the Saturation app.

Yet there are also many things that the SE can do. It warns you when the heart rate is too high, too low or irregular. It has fall detection: if the watch detects that you have fallen hard, it can automatically call the emergency services. And with the Sound app, the SE warns you if your ambient noise is too loud.

4. Chip

The Apple Watch Series 6 has the best and latest chip: an S6 chip. It is about twenty percent faster than the S5 chip from the SE – which, incidentally, is still an excellent chip. We know that chip from the Apple Watch Series 5 from 2019, and apps still load super fast on it.

The Series 6 also has a U1 chip that is completely missing on the SE. The U1 chip is intended for very accurate location determination. At the moment, however, Apple is not doing much with this chip. Maybe that will change, it remains to be seen.

And this is the same …

  • Available in 40 or 44 mm.
  • Water-resistant up to 50 m.
  • Various health functions (fall detection, SOS emergency notification, heart rate warnings, decibel warnings).
  • Compass.
  • Same straps.
  • The battery life of 18 hours.
  • Suitable for watchOS 7.

Conclusion

The Apple Watch SE is € 130 cheaper than the topper of the moment, the Apple Watch Series 6. We expect the SE to become the most popular model because for many people the SE offers all the necessary options. You can buy the Apple Watch Series 6 if you want to keep a close eye on your health with the Ecg app and the saturation app. If you don’t plan on doing that, you pay that 130 euros extra for an even faster chip, an (admittedly super handy) Always-on display and maybe a color. Is that worth it to you?

The Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch are already available from Apple. Soon you will also find them at stores.
