Users of Sony’s recent high-performance Xperia smartphones will be able to shoot videos in 4k and slow-motion videos in full HD after the update to Android 4.4. Screenshots of Android 4.4 point to a new device that Sony is working on.

Sony already wanted to make 4k videos possible in the Xperia Z1, but that feature turned out not to be in the final firmware. That the Snapdragon 800-soc in the Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra and Xperia Z1 Compact can make 4k videos, is apparent from the properties that Qualcomm published and because Samsung built the feature into its Galaxy Note 3.

The XperiaGuide site published the screenshots showing the new features. In addition to recording videos in 4k, users can record full-HD videos at 60fps, enabling slow-motion video. The iPhone 5s, among others, also makes this possible, although it records videos at 120fps for that function and does so in 720p.

XperiaGuide mentions that it is not yet certain that the functions with the updates will be usable on current Xperias, but that is obvious. Sony invariably adds functionality to existing models with updates. In addition, Sony as a concern is working on 4k; it released TVs with 4k resolution, among other things.

The screenshots come from the Sirius, a new model that Sony will probably present as the Xperia Z2 within a few weeks. The Japanese manufacturer will hold a press conference at the start of the Mobile World Congress telecom fair in Barcelona in two weeks.
