Xiaomi will start mass production of smartphones next year with a front camera behind the screen. For this, the Chinese manufacturer uses the third generation of its Under-Display Camera, with a new pixel layout, which should improve the screen quality.

Xiaomi says that the light passes through the screen through the space between the sub-pixels of the new pixel layout. It is a screen with an RGB sub-pixel format, but the manufacturer does not specify which panel type it is.

According to Xiaomi, the third generation of its Under-Display Camera technology offers the same performance as regular front cameras. That would be due to the use of a new pixel layout in combination with algorithms. The manufacturer does not show examples of the photo quality.

In its own words, Xiaomi’s technology offers the same image quality over the entire surface of the screen. With earlier versions, the image quality of the screen is lower where the camera is behind the screen, in order to allow more light to pass through.

Xiaomi has been experimenting for some time with hiding the front camera behind the screen of smartphones. That works with OLED screens, because they are transparent. The first generation of the technique never left the lab, the second generation was demonstrated last year.

ZTE is already coming this year with a smartphone that is equipped with a front camera behind the screen. That device will be presented on September 1. The phone from ZTE will have a 6.92 “OLED screen with a resolution of 2460×1080 pixels and a 32-megapixel front camera behind it. It is not yet known to what extent the quality of the screen of the ZTE device deviates from where the camera is located. .
