The organization of the Winter Olympics in South Korea has announced that it has been hit by an internet attack. The event’s internet and television services were temporarily affected by this. The organization is also very unwilling to comment.
At the time of the attack, the official website of the Winter Games was not accessible, which meant that visitors could not, among other things, print their tickets for the various events. The problem lasted for 12 hours, until Saturday morning, writes The Guardian. Reuters writes that the television services were also affected, but does not provide further details.
“We have agreed with the IOC that we will not reveal who is behind it,” said a spokesperson for the South Korean organization.
Investigators from security firm ThreatConnect announced in January that they had found evidence that Russia was planning an internet attack on the Games. This may be in retaliation for the strict sanctions imposed on Russian athletes for a doping scandal. Russia denied any involvement in an attack before the ceremony started, Reuters reports. McAfee has also found traces of a hacking campaign disguised as official communication about the Winter Games, but the company is not making any statements about a possible person responsible for this.
