On October 31, the sale of consumer computers with Windows 7 will stop, Microsoft has determined. Sales will therefore stop a year after the retail version was deleted. Computer manufacturers can still sell Windows 7 Professional on business PCs.

Microsoft has set the end-of-sales date for Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium, and Ultimate to October 31, 2014. This means that computer manufacturers will no longer be allowed to equip and sell consumer systems with Windows 7 after that date.

Retail sales were already canceled on October 31, 2013. Before Friday, the end date for the sale of systems with Windows 7 preinstalled still had to be determined. Some companies are still eager to install the predecessor to Windows 8 and 8.1, such as HP. Microsoft recently announced that it has sold 200 million Windows 8 licenses, but Windows 7 is also said to sell well. Windows 7 general support, including security and other updates, will end on January 13, 2015, but extended support, including necessary security updates, will end on January 14, 2020.

Windows 7 Professional systems may still be sold after October 31. The reason for this is that many companies are still in the process of switching to the operating system, Microsoft reports to ZDNet. Traditionally, companies are relatively late with a switch to a new OS, to make sure that a migration is not a problem.
