Windows 10 gets update that enables ‘unlocked framerate’ in UWP games
Microsoft is releasing an update to Windows 10 that makes it possible to play UWP games without the frame rate being locked at 30 or 60fps. The update also adds support for FreeSync and G-Sync monitors.
The arrival of the update has been announced on the DirectX developer blog. It is an update for Windows 10, which will be pushed to users of the operating system in the coming period. Gamers will also be able to download the update themselves as soon as it becomes available. Incidentally, individual games must also be updated before the lock can be removed from the frame rate. Microsoft expects Gears of War: UE and Forza Motorsport 6: Apex to be the first to receive an update.
Games that use the Universal Windows Platform framework have some limitations. For example, it is currently not possible to play without v-sync. The maximum frame rate is set equal to the refresh rate of the monitor. Forza Motorsport Apex beta, for example, can be set to a limit of 30 or 60fps. Displaying a higher frame rate is currently not possible, with the update that should change.
The UWP framework has been criticized a lot and many games that are only available in the Windows Store have problems. Quantum Break in particular worked very poorly at the time of release. In early May, Remedy released an update of a whopping 27GB, which should put an end to the framerate problems with the game.
Microsoft closes the blog with the announcement that “exciting developments” are coming in the field of using multiple GPUs in combination with DirectX 12. Current UWP games do not work or work poorly with sli or crossfire setups of multiple video cards . However, DirectX 12 does offer the possibility to deal effectively with the computing power of multiple GPUs.
