The pinball machines from Williams and Bally, from manufacturer WMS Industries, will soon appear in Pinball FX3. WMS has made the famous pinball machines of The Addams Family, Twilight Zone and Star Trek: The Next Generation, among others.

Over the course of the Pinball FX series, developer Zen Studios has designed all of the pinball machines in the games themselves. Now that the developer has licenses for the pinball machines from Willams and Bally, Zen Studios is allowed to use the original designs of classic models. The first cabinets to come to the game are Fish Tales, Junk Yard, Medieval Madness and The Getaway: High Speed 2. They are going to look just like their physical arcade counterparts. If the new additions are a success, more William and Bally pinball machines will be added in the future.

WMS Industries was initially known as Williams Manufacturing Company and was founded in 1943. Founder Harry Williams invented the ’tilt mechanism’. This was to prevent the ball from rolling backwards. In 1974, the name was changed to Williams Electronics, Inc and the company made arcade classics such as Defender and Robotron: 2084. During the 1970s and 1980s, Williams produced several electronic pinball machines, with 8-bit microprocessors and digital screens. These had to serve as a replacement for the heavy, mechanical pinball machines. In 1987 the company continued as WMS Industries. A year later, WMS bought its competitor Bally/Midway. Since 2016, WMS has been a subsidiary of Scientific Games, a manufacturer that makes slot machines.

Overview of pinball machines in Pinball FX3

WMS Industries initially licensed FarSight Studios, the developer of the 2012 game The Pinball Arcade. In May, the developer announced that the license would expire at the end of June. WMS did not want to renew the license. The pinball machines were withdrawn from sale at the end of June.

The classics will appear in Pinball FX3 this year. They will have the same features that the other pinball machines in the game have, such as multiplayer matchups, single player challenges and player-created tournaments. An amount is requested for the pinball machines of Williams and Bally. Zen Studios has not yet announced what amount that is. There is currently a beta with free access on Steam. The new pinball machines can already be played there. When ready for release, the cabinets will also be available in Pinball FX3 for Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4 and Xbox One.
