WhatsApp is working on an advanced search feature that will allow users to filter searches by media type. This will make it possible to find out which photos have been sent and received via conversations. The feature will be available in beta for iOS and Android at a later date.

Users could already search for messages and conversations with the regular search function, the Advanced Search function will be added later. Users can then search for multiple types of messages. WhatsApp works according to WABetaInfo with photos, gifs, links, videos, documents and audio messages. The app also immediately shows how many files are stored on the phone per medium.

If you press one of the six media, you will see a list of all media files on the phone. When someone presses ‘photo’, that person will see all the photos sent or received via WhatsApp. This also includes a preview photo, including any name of the group conversation and the sender. These results can be filtered by typing in the search bar. Nothing is known yet about locations and vCards, which are not on the list of searchable media.

WABetaInfo says the feature isn’t available yet, but it should be with the next update to the TestFlight beta program. That program is only available to iOS users, beta users on Android can use the feature at a later date. It is unknown when the feature will be publicly available. It’s not all the Facebook subsidiary is working on. Work is also underway on a dark mode, fingerprint unlocking and an option to decline group calls.
