WhatsApp is working on a feature to share files with people close to the user. The feature would be similar to AirDrop on iPhones and Quick Share on Android devices.

WABetaInfo discovered in version 2.24.2.20 of the WhatsApp beta for Android a new feature that makes it possible to share files with nearby users. The feature is said to be called ‘People Nearby’ and uses end-to-end encryption for data transfer. It is not clear whether there is a file size limit. Currently, the messaging service lets users share files up to 2GB via the regular sharing feature.

It is unknown how close users need to be to use the feature. WABetaInfo’s screenshots show that both users need to open People Nearby to share files. Reportedly, shaking the device is required to initiate a share request. The feature is expected in a future public update of WhatsApp.
