VIA: “Hammer only mainstream in Q3 of 2003”

DigiTimes has a article put online initially drawing attention to the fact that AMD showed samples of the K8 processor line to the public at the recent CeBIT Shanghai event. According to AMD’s roadmap, chips intended for server use will hit the market in January 2003, while desktop processors are expected to appear as early as Q4 2002. The message really gets interesting in the last paragraph. VIA, ALi and SiS have always confirmed that they have almost finished their first Hammer chipsets. However, VIA is now making a strange statement, saying that the 64-bit Hammer chips will probably not replace the 32-bit K7 chips in the mainstream market until the third quarter of 2003. This is a fairly remarkable statement from the largest chipset manufacturer for AMD processors.
