VeraCrypt has released an update to its encryption software for the first time in over a year. The new version is also supported on Apple’s M1 chip and OpenBSD, but support for Windows 7 and 8 and for macOS 10 will disappear.

VeraCrypt 1.25 can be downloaded from SourceForge. It is the first update to the software since November 2020, when a vulnerability in macOS Big Sur was fixed. The new release again contains several bug fixes, including a memory leak and a replacement of outdated runtime functions. Also, the new tool blocks a system partition from being rearranged in Windows if it is encrypted.

The new versions add support for different systems and chips. For example, VeraCrypt now works on devices with Apple’s M1 processors, and on Windows systems on Arm64 architectures such as the Surface Pro devices. For the latter, it is not possible to encrypt an entire system. There is also support for OpenBSD, and the developers have created an MSI installer that runs on Windows 10 or 11 that allows administrators to perform a silent deployment.

At the same time, support for multiple operating systems is disappearing. That happens for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1, and Windows Vista. Support will also disappear for macOS 10.7 and 10.8, Lion and Mountain Lion.
