Valve appears to have started behind the scenes in categorizing games that may or may not be compatible with the Steam Deck. The company divides the games into “verified”, “playable” and “not supported” categories.
At the time of writing, 86 games in a “hidden” search result on SteamDB have been categorized based on their compatibility with the Steam Deck handheld, a user on the Steam Deck Reddit discovered. SteamDB is not affiliated with Valve but uses the SteamKit software to extract information from the underlying Steam database. So far, Valve has only released a few games that are officially categorized. Ultimately, the company wants to test all games available through Steam for compatibility with the Steam Deck.
Most titles so far have been labeled “verified” and will work fully as intended on the Steam Deck based on Valve’s requirements. That is, the games include full controller support, can handle screen resolutions of 1280×720 or 1280×800 pixels and have full SteamOS support.
‘Playable’ games have one or more compatibility issues, although the game runs mostly without problems. For example, Valheim occasionally requests a controller or mouse on the Steam Deck. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt also falls under this category; the in-game text is very small and therefore difficult to read.
For the time being, the category ‘not supported’ mainly includes VR games. According to Valve, the console is in principle capable of playing such games, but is not optimized for this. Some non-VR games are also not supported on the Steam Deck for the time being. Valve writes that support for the games in question is still being worked on, which suggests that a game could be verified later.
