Universal Studios Japan Teams Up With Pokémon Company

Universal Studios Japan and The Pokémon Company have announced a “long-term partnership”. What that exactly means is still unclear, but from next year there should already be something in the amusement park that is related to Pokémon.

The Japanese theme park itself says that “innovative technology” will be involved when Pokémon makes its appearance in Universal. The companies do not write exactly what park visitors can expect from 2022 in the field of Pokémon. So it’s not clear whether that’s going to be shows, attractions, or even entire Pokémon-themed areas, although it doesn’t seem likely that the latter two could be built in the coming year. However, the companies hope that ‘the new experiences will revitalize the tourist market’.

It won’t be the first time Pokémon has appeared in an amusement park. In 2005, the PokéPark was opened in Japan. That was all about the pocket monsters. There were about twenty Pokémon-related attractions. The park featured a bumper car attraction in which visitors had to choose one of two teams, Team Magma or Team Aqua, and compete against the other team in a bumper car competition. There was also a rocking boat in the shape of the Pokémon Latios and Latias and there was a Ferris wheel with Pokéballs as seats. The park closed again the same year. Another attempt was made in 2006, this time in Taiwan, but that too closed after a few months.

Universal Studios Japan has represented more game franchises in the park. For example, there are attractions based on Monster Hunter, for example one where visitors have to fight against monsters from the game series in VR. An entire area has also been created based on Super Mario. A Donkey Kong section is also due to appear in the theme park in 2024.
