Unity is laying off 25 percent of its employees this month, which amounts to roughly 1,800 people. As far as we know, this is the largest round of layoffs within the company to date.

From one document from the US SEC it appears that Unity is implementing the layoffs due to ‘restructuring and a new focus on the core business’. In November 2023, 265 employees were also dismissed. Then the game engine maker announced a ‘corporate reset’, which is a result of the controversial ‘runtime’ fee that developers would have to pay per game installation. Although Unity toned down the new pricing system as a result of the controversy, the then CEO resigned and the company is therefore in the process of restructuring.
