Twitter has pulled the Periscope app to stream live video from the Play Store and the App Store. It had been known for some time that the service would stop and now the app can no longer be used. Periscope has existed for seven years.

Live videos from the past can still be downloaded by creators, says Twitter. This is done via a web interface. Posted links will also continue to work, but making new live videos via Periscope is no longer possible. This is the end of the service, which has been in existence since 2014. It was already known that Periscope would stop.

Periscope started in 2014, after which Twitter took over the company the following year. Periscope was not publicly available at the time. The app competed with Meerkat at a time when live video streaming seemed to be booming on social media.

A few years later, Facebook also started offering live streaming options. The technology came under fire after streamers started broadcasting suicides and attacks live on the internet, among other things. For example, the terrorist attack in Christchurch, New Zealand, was broadcast live via Facebook.
