Creative Assembly has announced the arrival of the strategy game Total War: Warhammer III. This third title in the strategy series based on the fantasy setting of the Warhammer world will be released sometime later this year.

The existing Steam page does not yet mention an exact release date, although it does say ‘late 2021’. Total War: Warhammer III is set around the period of Karl Franz’s reign, with Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th Edition being the primary source, Creative Assembly writes in a faq. This third title in the series adds the polar bear-driving people from Kislev, who are also central to the cinematographic trailer. In addition, the China-based Grand Cathay faction is present. The four factions of Chaos Realm are also present, namely Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh and Tzeentch. Nine playable Legendary Lords will be present, although details have not yet been released.

Developer Creative Assembly says it is still working on a combined playing field for players who own the three Warhammer games in the Total Wars series. This will be a huge directory that will be available for free as DLC for these owners. The developer is not giving further details yet, saying it is now targeting Total War: Warhammer III. That probably means that this collective map will not be released until after the release of the new Total War game.

In order to use this combined playing field, it is necessary that the three games in the series have been purchased from the same digital store. However, this may change as Creative Assembly expresses the hope that players will be able to link their Epic Games Store and Steam accounts via Total War Access sometime in the future. The developer is working on this with the parties involved, but says he cannot guarantee this functionality right away. The developer also says it hopes to be able to release the previous two Warhammer games in the Epic Games Store before Total War: Warhammer III comes out.

The Total War series consists of strategy games with rts and turn-based elements that distinguish themselves, among other things, by large armies that players can control. Usually the games focus on historical eras and events, but the Warhammer games are an exception with their fantasy setting. Sega announced in late 2012 that it had partnered with Games Workshop, the company that owns the rights to the Warhammer franchise. The original Total War: Warhammer came out in 2016 and part two followed a year later.
