About 2 months before the new season of the FIA Formula E championship begins in Saudi Arabia, Audi presents the newly developed Audi e-tron FE05. Drivers Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi of the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler Formula E-team aim again at victories and a new title.

Larger range

Thanks to the greater range of the new cars, there is no need to change cars during the races starting on the 15th of December. The capacity of the battery pack is now sufficient to complete the full 45-minute race duration.

Audi has been carefully prepared for the new technical and strategic challenges, in particular with the powertrain, which consists of the engine, inverter, transmission, parts of the rear axle and the associated software. Because the rest of the car is the same for all teams, teams at the powertrain can prove their technical qualities.

Last season the Audi e-tron FE04 was already the most efficient car, making the Audi Sport Team Abt Schaeffler also won the team championship. The Audi e-tron FE05 is the successor to the continued development of this successful model.

Drive train: 95% components are new

Audi and technology partner Schaeffler have jointly developed the engine-generator unit under the name Audi Schaeffler MGU03. The emphasis was on further improving efficiency. 95% of all components of the powertrain are new, while a weight reduction of 10% could be realized.

Formula E season 2018/2019

In the fifth season of the Formula E, the engine can deliver a maximum power of 250 kW (340 hp) in qualifying. In the race, the power is limited to 200 kW (272 hp).

New for the coming season are the so-called activation zones (similar to DRS in Formula 1), a runway section where the power is temporarily increased to 225 kW (306 hp). The ‘fan-boost’ temporary up to 250 kW (340 hp) power for the riders with the most votes from the online selection is maintained.

The minimum weight including the rider is 900 kg. Acceleration from 0-100 km / h takes 3.1 seconds, the top speed is around 240 km / h.

No rear wing

All Formula E teams use an identical 374 kg heavy battery from McLaren with a capacity of 52 kWh, which can be charged in 45 minutes. New is the halo system that provides extra protection for the rider.

It is remarkable that the new formula car has no rear wing. Instead, the large diffuser at the back provides the necessary downward pressure.

13 races

In the upcoming season, 13 races in twelve metropolises will be on the program. In addition to performances in countries such as Mexico, Hong Kong and New York, the Formula E also runs in the European cities of Rome, Paris, Monaco and Berlin.

Drivers Daniel Abt and Lucas di Grassi are also in action in the 2018/2019 season for the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler Formula E team. In addition, the British team Virgin Racing is also introducing two Audi e-tron FE05s.
