Apple unveiled four new iPhones during the iPhone 12 event yesterday and one more thing: the MagSafe technology. What exactly is that? And why does it only work with the iPhone 12 ?
MagSafe: even from the past
Maybe MagSafe sounds familiar to you. And that may be true, because Apple has already used the technology for MacBooks. The MacBooks between 2006 and 2016 had a charger that you magnetically clicked onto the device. If you held the plug close to the connection, it immediately jumped to the right place.
Now MagSafe is back, but for the iPhone. Apple yesterday launched several MagSafe accessories for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro. These include covers, card holders, and chargers, all magnetically clickable to your iPhone. In this way you automatically attach the accessories in exactly the right place. This only works with the latest iPhones, because they have a magnetic ring built in.
With the MagSafe charger, Apple is launching its own wireless iPhone charger for the first time. It’s a bit like an enlarged version of the Apple Watch charger. There will also be a MagSafe Duo to simultaneously charge your iPhone and Apple Watch.
There are already plenty of wireless chargers, but Apple wouldn’t be Apple if they didn’t do things just that little bit differently. Where standard Qi chargers deliver 7.5 watts, the MagSafe delivers 15 watts. Charging your iPhone (but possibly also your AirPods) is super fast. This only works with the new iPhones. You can charge older iPhones with it, but then it goes at the normal pace. The advantage of a MagSafe case in combination with the charger is that the iPhone also ‘clicks’ in the right place. You do not have to take your phone out of the case when you are going to charge it.
MagSafe accessories go into presale from Apple this Friday, along with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.
