Tesla has been commissioned to build a large battery park in Australia for the storage of sustainable energy. The Li-ion battery storage plant with a capacity of 129 megawatt hours should be ready in December.

The storage plant will be located near Jamestown in South Australia and will be connected to the Hornsdale Wind Farm of energy supplier Neoen. The sustainably generated energy is stored in the batteries and supplied to the electricity grid during peak hours. This should improve the reliability and stability of the electricity grid.

Tesla obtained the contract through a tender. The amount the company will receive for building the park with Li-ion batteries has not been disclosed. When complete in December, the storage should be able to supply more than 30,000 households with power.

According to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the capacity of the battery park is three times as much big as that of the largest energy store to date. In Europe, Eneco and Mitsubishi have been working on an energy storage plant with a capacity of 51 megawatt hours since June.

Update: In March, Elon Musk made a promise that Tesla could build a large battery park within 100 days. If the project is not completed within that period, Australia will receive the energy storage plant for free.
