Tesla will soon enter the solar energy market. This is evident from a recently registered brand name of the company. Until now, Tesla is mainly known for its electric cars and has already made an offer for solar energy company SolarCity.

The trademark database of the US Patent Office contains a registration of the ‘Tesla’ brand from the day Tesla announced its intention to acquire SolarCity. The description of the brand name is ‘Monitoring of solar panels and other equipment for use in converting solar energy into electricity’, i.e. monitoring solar panels and other equipment for use in converting solar energy into electricity. Other registrations also speak of solar panels, where before June Tesla described itself as a car company.

In addition, Tesla has changed its website URL from teslamotors.com to tesla.com, Reuters news agency noted. In addition, all employee email addresses have previously been changed to tesla.com, a source told the news agency. All this points to an upcoming name change and possibly an expansion of the company’s activities.

Tesla founder Elon Musk has has been talking on Twitter about a new ‘master plan’ for his company for days. It is unknown what exactly he means by that, but it seems that Tesla is taking it in a new direction.

It is not yet known whether the acquisition of SolarCity will go through. SolarCity was founded in 2006 by Elon Musk’s cousins Peter and Lyndon Rive. Musk himself is chairman of the company. At the end of 2015, as CEO of SolarCity, he presented a solar panel that should be cheap and efficient. However, construction of the $900 million factory where the panels will be made has been postponed. Making the equipment for the production would be more difficult than expected.
