Synology Shows DSM 4.0 Beta at CES
Synology showed a new version of the Diskstation management software for its NAS at CES. The 4.0 beta brings, among other things, a new appearance. In addition, there is now support for packages and improved notification management.
In version 4.0 of DSM, the way to work with individual applications has been overhauled. The system now works with packages that can be installed individually, and turned on and off. In addition, administrators can set which packages should be accessible to certain users. In addition to packages, there are now also widgets that are displayed on the home screen of the interface. The latest DSM version also contains a built-in virus scanner, based on antivirus software from the company Clam.
Another new feature is Cloud Station, which is very similar to Dropbox. Users can link folders on their desktop or laptop to a shared folder on the NAS. The Synology software then ensures that files in the different locations are always up-to-date. Cloud Station has support for version control and initially the last thirty variants of a file will be recoverable.
The beta of version 4.0 should be available for download the week of January 16 and will work on all models released after 2008. Synology hopes to have the final version in March.
