Super Mario Run has been downloaded 200 million times, but it doesn’t deliver enough

Nintendo has announced that the smartphone game Super Mario Run has been downloaded 200 million times. Despite this, according to the company, the game does not generate enough profit. Nintendo is satisfied with the money that Fire Emblem Heroes generates.

Commenting on Monday’s quarterly results, Nintendo said it had “not yet reached an acceptable profit” from the mobile game. Super Mario Run was Nintendo’s first game for Android and iOS, and the company says it learned a lot from the game.

Nintendo does not disclose exactly how much profit Super Mario Run has made, or what the expectations are. The game is free to download, but to play all levels an in-app purchase of 10.99 euros must be made. It is not known how many of the two hundred million players have done so. Due to the purchase price, the full version of the app may have been purchased by relatively few users.

Fire Emblem Heroes, released in February, is a bigger success as far as Nintendo is concerned. That game is also free, but includes various in-app purchases, with prices ranging from 2.29 to 79.99 euros per item. Presumably that will result in more recurring sales from avid players. Nintendo says it is “on track” to meet the game’s profit target.

Nintendo doesn’t say how many times Fire Emblem Heroes has been downloaded. It does emphasize the arrival of the next smartphone game: Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. That game follows the same revenue model as Fire Emblem Heroes, with microtransactions for various items. The new game has been available for download in Australia since October 25, and will be available in 41 other countries in November.

Nintendo also reports in the message that two million copies of the SNES Classic Mini have been sold. The retro console came out at the end of September. The document also provides a first look at Super Mario Odyssey’s sales figures: Nintendo estimates that more than two million copies were sold in the three days since the game was released.
