Spider-Man remaster for PS5 cannot inherit progression from PS4 version

The September 2018 PS4 title Spider-Man is getting a PS5 remaster, but players who already own the PS4 single player game won’t be able to transfer their progression to PS5 with this remaster.

Developer Insomniac Games announced this on Twitter, when a player asked if she could pick up where she left off or start all over again with Marvel’s Spider-Man: Remastered. The Verge has asked publisher Sony for a response, but the company has not yet responded. This Spider-Man remaster for PS5 will be available as part of Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition, which will cost $ 80. Spider-Man: Miles Morales himself is a standalone game that will cost $ 60 and will be released on November 19 for both PS4 and PS5.

The overall situation for transferring save games from a game for the PS4 to the upgraded version for the PS5 is not entirely clear. This will probably differ from game to game. For example, the recently released Marvel’s Avengers will receive a free next-gen update for the PS5 and Xbox Series X and Square Enix has already announced that the save files can be transferred. With FIFA 21, for example, this will not be the case with the PS5 and the Xbox Series X; only the progress made on FIFA 21 Ultimate Team can be carried over, with the progression on the newer consoles also being maintained for the older consoles.

This situation is somewhat more evident for the new Xbox Series X. Microsoft has previously announced that the Smart Delivery function of this console will not only automatically download the correct version of a game, but that the function will also transfer existing savegames from the Xbox One to the new console siphons. This is applied in any case with Microsoft’s first-party games that are optimized for the Series X. This technique is available for all developers to build into their games, but whether or not it does will depend on the choices made by those companies. Microsoft previously mentioned a list of games that support Smart Delivery: Halo Infinite, Cyberpunk 2077, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Destiny 2, DiRT 5, Scarlet Nexus, Chorus, Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, The Ascent, Call of the Sea, Gears 5, Second Extinction and Metal: Hellslinger.
