Speaking at the SXSW event in the US, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced that it plans to conduct short test flights with the company’s Mars rocket, also known as BFR, in the first half of 2019.

In the conversation, he said, “I feel quite optimistic about my schedule, although people have told me that historically I often make optimistic schedules.” He adds that it should be possible to conduct short test flights in the first half of next year, where Musk speaks of ‘short flights up and down’. The construction of the BFR would currently be carried out. Last year, Musk said the first cargo flights using the Interplanetary Transport System, to be used to colonize Mars and which will use the BFR, should be completed in 2022.

At the time, he also announced the plan to use the rocket for city trips on Earth in addition to space travel. According to Musk, most distances can be covered in 30 minutes and a flight with the rocket should cost about the same as a regular plane ticket. The BFR should eventually replace the Falcon Heavy’s current Falcon 9 rockets. SpaceX wants to put all its resources into building the bigger rocket. Musk said the company can do that with the revenue it earns from launching satellites for commercial parties and operating maintenance flights for the International Space Station.

SpaceX announced its plans to colonize Mars in 2016, along with plans for the larger rocket. The first spaceship to go to Mars will be named Heart of Gold by Musk, an ode to the spaceship in the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
