Sony’s Playstation Classic gets 20 games, launches in December

It could not be forgotten that Sony also wanted to have a piece of the retro cake that Nintendo had already cut with the NES and SNES Classic Mini and today it was announced that the time has come: the Playstation Classic is coming. The mini Playstation will cost 100 euros in Europe and of course there are a number of classic Playstation games.

The console itself is a perfect replica of the old Playstation and it works the same as with Nintendo’s mini versions: you get two (wired) controllers and you can connect the device to your TV via HDMI. Power goes via USB (adapter not included) and your old Playstation stuff such as memory cards and controllers do not work on this small one.

Which games are on the Playstation Classic?

The most important thing is of course the list of games, since this retro console also has no possibility (at least not officially) to add extra games to the provided set. According to Sony, the list of games varies slightly by region, but the following titles are guaranteed:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Tekken 3
  • Jumping Flash
  • Wild Arms

Well, there are only five of them. There is quite a lot to choose from, so I can imagine that there are still some knots to be made per region. We could not directly get an answer from Playstation itself as to what is still planned for Europe, so we will check what would be nice to have. If I could choose, then you got the following in addition to the announced games:

  • Gran Turismo 2
  • Klonoa
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2
  • Ape Escape
  • Crash Team Racing
  • Tomb Raider
  • Silent Hill
  • Resident Evil
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  • Driver
  • Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver
  • Oddworld: Abe’s Odyssey
  • Parappa the Rapper
  • Twisted Metal 2

Spoiler: this is not going to be the list. It is always a tragedy to get the rights of older games and so often games are chosen that are feasible and have sold well, instead of games that were good and still are.

It will be interesting to see to what extent many of these games (whichever they are) still remain in this world of PS4 Pros that can send 4K images to your screen. In addition to the N64, the Playstation was the first successful console that used 3D graphics and you can see that too. Whether people still have nostalgia for that style of graphics remains to be seen, but it’s great that they try it at Sony.
