According to sources from Bloomberg and Nikkei, Sony has adjusted its production plans for the PlayStation 5. The console builder would like to produce a total of 9 to 10 million copies this year. Previously talked about 5 to 6 million copies.

Multiple sources from Bloomberg Japan have confirmed that Sony wants to make up to ten million copies of its next-gen console this year, according to the publication. This strong growth was prompted by the corona pandemic, which is said to have increased the demand for consoles. Nikkei Asian Review also says that Sony is increasing the production of the PlayStation 5. According to sources of that publication, it concerns about nine million copies.

In April, Bloomberg came with the message that Sony would put the production of PS5 on a relatively low level, due to the high cost of the console. Then it was said that Sony would make 5 to 6 million in the financial year ending March 2021. That would be significantly less than the 7.5 million PlayStation 4 units sold in the first two quarters of that console’s release.

Bloomberg notes that Sony’s plans could still be hindered by logistical problems. Sony is releasing its PlayStation 5 this fall during the holiday season. An exact release date and price have not yet been announced.

Nikkei Asian Review reports that Facebook is also ramping up production of its Oculus headsets. The manufacturer would like to make 2 million in the second half of this year. That’s more than the total of 1.5 million Oculus headsets shipped across 2019, according to analysts. The VR headsets are also more popular, because people spend a lot of time at home during the corona pandemic.
