Sony will resume production of vinyl records in Japan. Japan currently has a producer of vinyl, but it can’t keep up with demand. It has been nearly thirty years since the Japanese company stopped producing LPs and singles on vinyl.

Production will resume in March 2018, says Japanese business newspaper Nikkei. Then it will be 29 years since the production of vinyl at Sony stopped. A master-making machine, needed to press the plates, has been in operation since February of this year in a studio in the Japanese capital Tokyo.

In addition to new albums, Sony will also release old Japanese music to which it has the rights on vinyl. Last year, the Japanese bought about 800,000 vinyl records, eight times as much as seven years ago. Currently there is only one company active in the production of vinyl in Japan, namely Toyokasei.
