Sony is working on a prototype of an autonomous vehicle that is equipped with four 35mm image sensors and four 4k screens all around. Instead of a windscreen, there is also a 4k screen, which can show images from the sensors.

The SC-1 is an autonomous vehicle with a length of 3.14 meters, width of 1.31 meters and height of 1.85 meters. The car can transport three people at a speed of 19 kilometers per hour. Sony has placed 35mm full-size R Exmor image sensors on all four sides.

Images from these sensors can be displayed on the 49″ LCD mounted where the windshield normally sits. According to Sony, the sensors are so sensitive that the vehicle can drive at night without having to turn on the headlights For autonomous driving, the sensors are assisted by a lidar and ultrasonic sensor.

The four 49″ screens with 4k resolution can be used to display information or advertising. The SC-1 obtains the image for this via an experimental 5G connection from Docomo. Sony will show the concept car from 9 to 11 November at the Mietekita Chotto Saki no Mirai exhibition, roughly translated ‘A look into the near future’, of the Science Museum in Tokyo.
